The Process of Transformation of Industrial Heritage: Strengths and Weaknesses

Anders Högberg Anders Högberg is doctor in Archaeology at Lund University and currently holds a position as associated professor at the Linné University in Kalmar (Sweden). He has for several years worked as an archaeologist within the heritage sector. He has published several studies on public archaeology, community archaeology and different aspects of heritage issues. Högberg has also a devoted interest in prehistoric lithic technology, and has recently published studies on the subject and the raise of behavioural modernity in present day South Africa. Högberg is the editor of the peer‐review journal Current Swedish Archaeology.

Abstract

How can revealing the past at historic sites benefit our society? This question has been discussed recurrently over the years within heritage studies and heritage practices; the suggested answers are many. This text analyses what has been remembered and forgotten in an urban development process, when the previously industrial area of Lomma Eternit in south Sweden-was turned into a luxury residential area. The result shows that the visualization of industrial heritage as a result of the cultural heritage practise at the site, have created a place which today is highly appreciated, but is also conflict generating.
