Instrumentalism in Heritage Learning

Henrik Zipsane Henrik Zipsane is Doctor in history from the Danish University of Education and guest professor at Linköping University in Cultural Heritage and Learning. He is director of Jamtli Foundation and co‐director of The Nordic Centre for Heritage Learning. He has published several articles on different aspects of learning through cultural heritage. He is member of the board of the international organization Pascal Observatory of which he is also an academic associate. He is also on the board of Culture Action Europe and is heading the work on learning and culture in the European Commission Access to Culture Dialogue Platform. He is an expert on Adult Learning for the European Agency on Culture, Education and Audiovisual.

Abstract

Many people employed in the heritage sector are hostile to current political demands. History and heritage cannot be subject to short sighted political thinking! This paper demonstrates that this hostility is not only counter productive for the sector but also to staff. The critique is furthermore based on false ideas of what museums, archives and heritage sites used to be. The article shows the historical coherence behind post‐modern heritage learning.
