Playing the game the child allots

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between play and interpretative verbalization in child analysis. Through examination of a clinical case, the paper distinguishes between two different modes of interpretative interventions in play. It is the contention of the paper that the analyst’s capacity to tolerate tension and respond to the roles the child assigns him widens the area of play, facilitating a space for thinking through. Interpretation is formulated in two distinct ways: (a) interpreting from the context of the roles the analyst assumes within play, respecting the games and facilitating the patient’s understanding; (b) interpreting at a distance from play, on the one hand distinguishing the area of play, and on the other hand analyzing that which occurs verbally and non‐verbally.

Das vom Kind zugewiesene Spiel spielen.  Dieser Artikel untersucht das Verhältnis zwischen dem Spiel und der deutenden Verbalisierung in der Kinderanalyse. Anhand der Untersuchung eines klinischen Falls wird hier zwischen zwei verschiedenen Formen deutender Intervention beim Spiel unterschieden. In diesem Artikel wird argumentiert, dass die Fähigkeit des Analytikers, Spannungen auszuhalten und auf die Rollen zu antworten, die das Kind ihm zuweist, den Bereich des Spiels erweitert und damit einen Raum für das Durchdenken ermöglicht. Deutung wird hier auf zwei unterschiedliche Weisen formuliert: a) Deutung aus dem Kontext der Rollen heraus, die der Analytiker innerhalb des Spiels einnimmt, wobei das Spiel respektiert und das Verständnis des Patienten gefördert wird; b) Deutung aus einer Distanz vom Spiel heraus, wobei einerseits der Bereich des Spiels und andererseits das hervorgehoben wird, was verbal und nonverbal geschieht.

Jugar el juego asignado por el niño.  Este artículo explora la relación entre el juego y la verbalización interpretativa en el análisis de niños. Mediante un estudio de un caso clínico, el artículo distingue dos modos de intervención interpretativa en el juego. En el presente trabajo se sostiene que la capacidad del analista de tolerar la tensión y responder a los roles que el niño le asigna amplía el área de juego, lo cual facilita un espacio para la elaboración. La interpretación es formulada de dos maneras distintas: a) a partir del contexto de los roles que el analista asume dentro del juego, respetando los juegos y facilitando la comprensión del paciente; b) a cierta distancia del juego, de un lado distinguiendo el área del juego, y del otro, analizando lo que ocurre verbal y no verbalmente.

Jouer le jeu que l’enfant propose.  Cet article explore la relation entre le jeu et la verbalisation interprétative dans les cures psychanalytiques d’enfants. A travers l’étude d’un cas clinique, l’auteur définit deux modes distincts d’interventions interprétatives du jeu. Il montre comment la capacité de l’analyste de tolérer les tensions et de réagir aux rôles que l’enfant lui assigne élargit l’aire du jeu et favorise l’espace de l’élaboration. Les interprétations sont formulées de deux façons différentes : a) à partir des rôles assumés par l’analyste dans le jeu, il s’agit de respecter le jeu et de faciliter la compréhension du patient; b) à distance du jeu, en distinguant d’une part l’aire du jeu, et de l’autre ce qui se passe verbalement et non verbalement.

Stando al gioco proposto dal bambino.  Questo lavoro esplora il rapporto fra gioco e parola interpretativa nell’analisi infantile. Muovendo da un caso clinico, si opera una distinzione fra due diversi modi di interpretare nel corso dell’attività ludica. Si sostiene l’idea che la capacità dell’analista di tollerare la tensione e di assumere i vari ruoli che gli vengono assegnati dal bambino consenta di allargare il campo del gioco, e che si venga in tal modo a creare uno spazio per il pensiero e l’elaborazione. Si tratta quindi di due diversi modi di interpretare: a) l’interpretazione all’interno dei ruoli che l’analista assume nel gioco; intepretazione questa che rispetta la narrativa proposta dal bambino e che è di facile comprensione per quest’ultimo; b) l’interpretazione che si stacca dal gioco, designando da una parte lo spazio ludico e e analizzando dall’altra cosa stia accadendo a livello verbale e non‐verbale.

3. Diagnostic play hours occurring before treatment are a common practice in Buenos Aires, following the example of Arminda Aberastury (1996), who in close collaboration with Melanie Klein was a pioneer of child psychoanalysis in Latin America.
