Complex dynamic behavior in adhesive tape peeling

Abstract

In this work we analyze dynamic features of the peeling of an adhesive tape from the roll. Two sets of experiments were carried out. In the first, we have measured the unwinding force of an adhesive tape at several constant peel velocities. Analysis of the force-time series, using the Lyapunov exponent and Grassberger-Procaccia dimension, showed that the force oscillations were deterministic. In the second set of experiments, the acoustic emission generated by unwinding at constant peel force was studied. Power spectra analysis of the acoustic emission-time series revealed the existence of two frequency domains: lower frequencies are associated with stick-slip and higher frequencies are related to the massive rupture of adhesive fibrils. The values of the Grassberger-Procaccia dimension for the two sets of experiments were similar, and also comparable to the value reported by Scudiero et al., using electrical current-time series obtained while peeling an adhesive tape from a copper substrate. This agreement indicates that the same dissipation mechanisms are operative in the present case and in the case reported previously by these authors.
