Abstract

A novel compact broadband double-ridged horn antenna is proposed, which is used in see-through-wall radar system. To cover the low frequency band with relatively small size, the ridge is specially designed to form an irregular cavity. The profile function of the ridges is optimized to realize compact size and wide working frequency band. The irregular cavity increases cavity length to improve the working performance of low frequency. Proposed antenna occupies just half of the length of conventional horn antenna with the same frequency band. Antenna prototype is fabricated and tested, which proves its performance. The VSWR in the whole frequency band from 800 MHz to 6 GHz is below 2.5 with average gain larger than 8 dBi. Reduction in the size of the antenna reduces the weight and cost, which is its advantage.
