Abstract

The present study examines some predictors that may affect what is known as “the childhood adaptation period” that takes place when three-year olds go to school for the first time. The study included 163 children (mean age 39.59 months) from 5 infant schools. Measurements were taken at the time they started school, during their first weeks and at three months—i.e., a longitudinal design in which the data was collected before, during and after the children's schooling. The measures used were reports from the parents, teachers and the children themselves. Some of the most salient results were: 1) the predictive power of parents' opinions and feelings, and their style of upbringing; and 2) some child characteristics related to their temperament and attachment. The predictive power of parents' opinions, feelings and attributions is a big novelty in this field, with the advantage that it is a variable in which it is possible to intervene.
