Abstract

The study develops the Spanish adaptation for children of Pettigrew and Meertens (1995) Racial Prejudice Scale. Our aim is: 1) to offer an instrument that can discriminate between this type of views during childhood; 2) to search for data in this population confirming that children differentiate between two forms of racial prejudice that currently seem to have great psychosocial relevance: blatant, traditional or open racism and subtle racism. We worked with 251 subjects between 12- and 14-years old in educational contexts. The results reveal that racial prejudices are present in this context, especially in the subtle prejudice category. We also found relevant differences related to subjects' sex and age. But above all, the reliability of the scale's Spanish adaptation for children is verified, as well as its factorial and dimensional structure. Overall, it is shown that this is a useful scale to assess views and feelings about racial prejudice in the present increasingly multicultural educational context (Spanish National Statistics Institute, 2005).
