Abstract
The aim of this paper is to offer alternatives for the explanation of pro-environmental actions. With this aim, we propose a dynamic and situational approach to environmental behaviour defined as the result of relevant study variables (attitudinal, contextual—physical and social—and behavioural variables) and the relationships between them. Using attitudinal, contextual and behavioural variables we studied the consequences of interaction between attitudinal and contextual variables for three aspects of environmental behaviour: the carrying out of ecologically responsible behaviours, the feeling of moral obligation to carry out such behaviours, and the predictive value of attitudes. We analysed 23 environmental behaviours grouped in four categories (recycling behaviours, buying ecological products, water consumption and energy consumption). Results show the influence of contextual variables on pro-environmental behaviour and its prediction, and on subjects' environmental moral discourse.
