Abstract

The great diversity of events that produce guilt are analysed in detail in the present study. The sample were 202 subjects, aged 15 to 19 years (64 males and 65 females) and 25 to 48 years (34 males and 39 females). They were asked to report their most recent experience of guilt and three things that usually made them feel guilty. In both cases, and for the entire sample, of the 21 categories into which the events were classified, the most frequent were: “neglecting someone”, “being linked to another person's misfortune”, “procrastinating or otherwise neglecting studies or work” and “being rude, mean, cold, or nasty to someone”. Significant age and gender differences were found in the frequencies for the different categories.
