La evolución de la mente. Algunas consideraciones metodologicas y substantivas

Resumen

El objetivo de este artículo es realizar algunas reflexiones teóricas sobre la evolución de lo mental que no aparecen explícitamente en los otros artículos que componen este monográfico. Para ello se empieza con una consideración funcional del término “mente” y de las relaciones entre funciones y estructuras, distinguiendo, al mismo tiempo, entre distintos dominios genéticos de diversa amplitud temporal, lo que, a su vez, exige tanto considerar los diversos modos de relación organismo-ambiente que se dan en cada uno de ellos, como la naturaleza de los procesos adaptativos que se producen en cada caso, entre los cuales está la propia transformación que la acción de los organismos produce sobre el ambiente, algo de especial relevancia en el caso humano con la creación de los símbolos. Esta reflexión teórica conduce a algunas consideraciones metodológicas sobre el entrecruce de las diversas escalas evolutivas, que se centran sucesivamente en el examen crítico, primero, del concepto de recapitulación y, segundo, del uso del método comparativo. Todo ello con la finalidad de poder llegar a producir una imagen comprensible del proceso evolutivo del cual resultan las mentes actualmente existentes.

Abstract

The paper offers some theoretical reflections on the evolution of the mind beyond those explicitly developed in the other contributions included in this special issue. It starts with the presentation of a functional view on the “mind”, with a particular consideration of the relationship between functions and structures. At the same time, the need for a separate consideration of four genetic domains (phylogenetic, cultural-historical, ontogenetic and microgenetic) spanning along different lengths of time is claimed. It continues calling for a separate consideration of the nature of the different adaptive processes that happen in each of these genetic domains, paying particular attention to changes in the environment which result from the actions of organisms, such as human created symbols. Finally, some methodological considerations concerning the interweave between these four evolutionary scales are offered. These focus on a critical examination, first, of the concept of recapitulation, and second, on the use of comparative methods. It is argued that the final aim of these studies on the evolution of the mind is to offer an understandablepicture of the evolutionary process from which current minds have resulted.
