Current state of research on homophobia

Pages 59-72 | Published online: 23 Jan 2014

Abstract

In the study on homophobia, besides the continuous search for an answer to the questions of why homosexuality is still not socially accepted and what repercussions this has at a personal level, the aim of our most recent research is to analyse the correlates of this attitude. Despite the fact that various studies have confirmed the relationship between certain variables, such as, for example, the absence of interaction with gay and lesbians or the perception that these attitudes are shared by their peers, for the moment the contribution of each of these variables in predicting homophobia remains unknown. Nevertheless, what does seem to have been confirmed is that there is not just one pattern of development.

The diversity of approaches and the lack of a theoretical structure emphasize the need for future studies, both at the empirical and theoretical studies. The usefulness of educational programs in changing attitudes is pointed out.
