Abstract

This research analyses the behavioural problems of adolescents in relation with affection and the form grandparents apply their rules. The sample was composed of 70 adolescents (39 girls and 31 boys, with a mean age of 13.7), and their 54 custody grandparents (36 maternal and 18 paternal). The instruments used were: the Affect Scale and the Rules and Demands Scale, both by Bersabé, Motrico & Fuentes (2001), and the Youth Self Report (YSR, Achenbach, 2001). The results showed that adolescents perceived high scores in affection and communication by custody grandparents and slow scores in criticism and rejection. Moreover, the grandparents used mainly an inductive style of applying rules. Furthermore, the majority of foster adolescents can be classified within the normal range in behavioural problems. When the grandparents were more affective and used an inductive style of applying rules, the adolescents perceived themselves with less behaviour problems.
