Abstract

The aim of this study was 1) to evaluate if any differences exist between men and women in relation to which type of infidelity affects them most (sexual infidelity vs. emotional infidelity) in a Spanish sample (200 females and 117 males) and a Cuban sample (102 females and 98 males), and 2) to evaluate if sexism influenced in the choice of the type of infidelity that affected them most. We obtained measures of the dilemma (choosing between sexual infidelity vs. emotional infidelity), emotional reactions and pain elicited by both types of infidelities (sexual and emotional). The data obtained in the Spanish sample and in the Cuban sample were compared. We tested if the data obtained matched evolutionist postulates. According to these postulates, men are more concerned about sexual infidelity than women. On the other hand, women are more concerned about emotional infidelity. In the Spanish sample, emotional infidelity was more stressful for both women and men. In the Cuban sample, men were more stressed by sexual infidelity and women were equally stressed by both types of infidelity. Additionally, the relationship between hostile and benevolent sexism with sexual and emotional infidelity was analysed.
