Predictors of recycling behavior among primary school students in Mexico

Predictores del comportamiento de reciclaje en alumnos de educación primaria en México

Abstract

This research paper assessed the recycling behavior of 1040 third and sixth grade students in primary education. Three predictive variables were tested: environmental knowledge, attitude and ability. The purpose of this study was to compare the recycling behavior characteristics observed in the two grades and to identify the specific influence of the three predictive variables on the recycling behavior of students. Sixth grade students performed better than third grade students in the variables knowledge and ability and a statistically significant difference was found (α =.001). This was not the case when testing attitude, where third grade students, particularly girls, showed more willingness to protect the environment. Knowledge and ability have a greater influence on recycling behavior than environmental attitude.

Resumen

Esta investigación evalúa el comportamiento de reciclaje de 1040 alumnos de tercer y sexto año de educación primaria a través de la medición de tres variables predictoras: conocimiento, actitud y habilidad ambientales. El propósito de este estudio consiste en comparar las características del comportamiento de reciclaje en los alumnos que cursan ambos grados, así como identificar la influencia específica de las tres variables predictoras en la conducta de reciclaje de los alumnos. Se encontró que los alumnos de sexto grado tuvieron un mayor número de respuestas correctas en la variable conocimiento y habilidad siendo estadísticamente significativa la diferencia con tercero (α =.001). No así en la variable actitud, en el que los alumnos de tercer grado, en particular las mujeres, mostraron una mayor disposición a cuidar el ambiente. La conducta de reciclaje tiene una influencia principalmente de las variables conocimiento y habilidades seguida por la actitud ambiental.
