Moderated Mediation in Career Development Research

Abstract

With its growing appeal, an increasing number of counseling-related research studies have embraced moderated mediation as a method of inquiry. The purpose of this article is to provide an introduction to some and a refresher to others the concept of moderated mediation and how it can be applied in career development research. We also provide a specific example of how moderated mediation can be tested using the Mplus software program.

A. Nayena Blankson

A. Nayena Blankson is an assistant professor at Spelman College. Her substantive research interests include the organization and development of cognitive abilities as related to individual factors such as personality, and contextual factors of parenting and schooling. She is also interested in quantitative methods and topics including measurement invariance, multivariate mathematical/statistical methods, and structural equation modeling.

Abiola O. Dipeolu

Abiola O. Dipeolu completed her graduate work at the Combined Counseling and School Psychology program, Florida State University. She is an assistant professor in Counseling, School & Educational Psychology, University at Buffalo-SUNY. Her research interest encompasses career development of individuals with disabilities, including LD, ADHD, and HASD. She is currently the immediate past president of the New York State Career Development Association. For relaxation, Dr. Dipeolu enjoys reading biographies and/or autobiographies of consequential figures.

Cassandra A. Storlie

Cassandra A. Storlie earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from The University of Iowa and has has held a variety of counseling leadership positions at state and regional levels. Her research lines of inquiry center on issues of career development among marginalized populations and counselor development.

Hongryun Woo

Hongryun Woo is an assistant professor at University of Louisville. She has over 10 years of work experiences as a counselor, researcher, and educator. She is committed to research on counselors’/counselor educators’? professional identity and their development in general.

Stephanie J. Hargrave

Stephanie J. Hargrave holds a PhD from Wichita State University in Community Psychology with an emphasis on Statistics and Research Methodology. She is currently the Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Guilford College.
