Abstract
Studies on the corrosion of mild steel by Uttar Pradesh soils and of their infrared curves revealed some interesting relationships. The number and strength of peaks did not show any relationship with the corrosion rate whereas the depths of peaks were found to bear significant relationships. Significant inverse relationships were obtained between the Si–OH peak and corrosion rate (r=−0·563), the Si–O peak and corrosion rate (r=−0·616), Al–O peak and corrosion rate (r=−0·720), Si–C peak and corrosion rate (r=−0·631) and Si–H peak and corrosion rate (r=−0·662). Corrosion of mild steel by soil could be predicted by the above five peaks of the IR curves of soil with the help of respective regression equations.
