Abstract
The article provides a survey of the historical development of preservation practice in archaeology and anthropology, with reference to both techniques and philosophy. The primary focus is placed on the evolution of a body of knowledge through the literature and the rise of scientific methods and specialization. The article includes a substantial historical bibliography.
