Abstract
The design of furnaces for heat treating metals is very dependent on the physical characteristics of the metal to be heated. After an outline of the various properties to be considered, the modes of heat transfer are discussed at sufficient length to clarify the remarks on the ways in which the individual heat requirements may be met by the furnace designer. While the author's personal experience is included in relation to the furnace installations described, no specific data on fuel consumption etc. are given. In conclusion, several interesting furnace designs are discussed.
