Scale formation on workpiece surface from built-up edge

Pages 488-490 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

Based on metallographic studies, a process of scale formation is described when mild steel was machined under built-up edge (BVE) conditions. The process of scale formation on the workpiece surface involved a cracking stage and a flow stage operating in a cyclic manner, and explained the characteristic saw-tooth profile obtained when a substantial BVE exists. Features of the process are discussed in relation to other work.
