The 9th International Conference on the Microscopy of Oxidation was held in the UK, at the University of Nottingham, from 14–16 April 2014. Over 90 delegates, from many different countries, attended the meeting, contributing some 65 oral and poster presentations.

The timetable for the conference followed the successful format of previous meetings in the series. There were sessions devoted to the fundamentals of oxidation as well as corrosion and oxidation in specific atmospheres such as steam or carbon dioxide, and more complex atmospheres generated by biomass, etc. Other applied topics, such as thermal barrier coatings, environmentally assisted cracking and the oxidation of nuclear related alloys were also highlighted. A lively poster session was staged, in addition to more conventional oral presentations, but the papers in this volume contain results from both the oral and poster presentations, all having been fully peer-reviewed prior to publication. Since the proceedings are reproduced directly from the journal issues, it was impractical to group the papers into topic areas, but detailed contents pages are provided. However, this method does ensure that the pagination in the journal is identical to the proceedings, thus avoiding any ambiguity in citation.

On the first evening of the conference, a wine reception kindly sponsored by CI Precision, was held at one of the bastions of English cricket, Trent Bridge, where we were treated to an interesting rendition of some of the basics of the game. On the second evening, we adjourned to Nottingham Castle. After a tour of the castle, we banqueted in the long gallery, prior to the presentation of the poster prizes. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the support of the Royal Microscopical Society in sponsoring the prizes for the best student posters, judged by an independent panel of international experts.

It is planned to hold the 10th meeting in this series in the UK once again, at Loughborough University in 2017.
