Notes
1 A notable initiative that strives to mobilize both the state authorities and the citizens towards a sustainable re-use of ancient theatres is the ‘Diazoma’ association (Diazoma, 2012).
2 The existing literature that demonstrates the general trends in cultural heritage management is vast, but interesting summaries that highlight specific changes of perceptions and good practice can be found in Lee et al. (2007: 9–13, figure 1·1, tables 1·1 and 1·2) and Willems (2010: 217, table 16·1).
3 Positive exceptions to these tendencies do exist, although they are quite few. The TEMPER Project that has strived to involve local communities and facilitate public participation in the management of Mediterranean prehistoric heritage (Conti, 2007) and the resulting management plan compiled for the archaeological site of Paliambela (Kotsakis et al., 2003) is a case in point.
