Abstract
Hysteretic behaviour numerical analysis has been carried out for elastic–plastic thin‐walled cylinders subjected to a constant axial compressive force and cyclic torsion. It is shown that various deformation modes appear, which are different from those under constant axial contraction, and that those modes cause rapid growth of strain nonuniformity. Also branching analysis for the same model has been performed according to symmetry limit theory and the predicted multiple branching behaviour is compared with the hysteretic behaviour.
