Abstract

Temperature distribution over SS400 carbon steel plate during the induction‐based line heating process was first analysed by a numerical method by electromagnetic‐thermal coupling analysis. To verify the effectiveness of the numerical analysis results, actual line heating‐induced deformation process was carried out by applying newly designed laboratory‐scale high frequency (HF) induction heating (IH) equipment capable of bending thick plate with a moving accuracy of ±0·1 mm in heating coil position. Comparison of analytical and experimental results showed a very good correlation. In this way, the effects of HF IH parameters such as input power and moving speed of heating source on the temperature distribution were subsequently confirmed. HF IH‐induced permanent bending for thick steel plate is also discussed in terms of z‐axis displacements and angular distortion.
