Abstract

Recently, as magnesium alloy has been applied in various engineering components that require low thickness and light weight, research on the press forming of magnesium alloy has been vigorously pursued. Existing studies on the forming of magnesium alloy have been undertaken for round or square types of component; yet, there has been little research on manufacturing parts with complex shapes by means of multi‐step processes. This study evaluates the formability of parts with complex shapes by applying warm press forming processes for magnesium alloy. A deep drawing process with three steps was performed to investigate the effect of the manufacturing process on the formability when simultaneously forming round and square shapes by using an AZ31 sheet manufactured by twin roll casting and rolling (TRCR) and extrusion (EXT) processes. The forming depth, depth distribution and microstructural evolution were investigated after the three‐step drawing.
