Abstract

The strength criterion is a basic mechanical theory. The failure modes of materials are relevant not only to stress conditions but also to material properties, and the mechanical basis and verification standards of strength criteria are discussed. The Mises criterion is deduced separately from the aspects of energy and stress, indicating that the Mises criterion is not only the triple shear energy but also the triple shear stress yield criterion of metals. Then the triple shear energy yield criterion of geomaterials deduced by the authors recently is introduced in detail, which is the unified expression of triple shear and single shear criterion for geomaterials and metals. After comparing and researching the commonly used yield criteria systematically, it is concluded that regardless of how the strength criterion is expressed, the essence and results of it are the same.
