Abstract

The fact of becoming grandparents brings about a significant change that requires a period of adaptation. The role of a grandmother has led way to that of grandmother-babysitter while disregarding her view on this task and the influence on her life. The aim of the study is to learn about the life experiences of elderly women who babysit their grandchildren and how it affects their daily lives. Qualitative research with a phenomenological approach was used. As sampling strategies, we used purposive sampling and snowball sampling. As data collection methods, we used unstructured interviews and a personal diary. The themes we came up with were dedication, role of the grandparent, motivation, idealization, coexistence, vital impact. We conclude that choice of care, setting time and intensity boundaries per week improves the way grandmothers look upon their task as babysitters.
