1 Catalogue references are to The Hanoverians on Britain's Throne 1714–1837, Katja Lembke, ed. (Dresden, Sandstein, 2014). This is the catalogue for both the exhibits at the Landesmuseum and Herrenhausen.

2 Georg Wilhelm resided at the dynastic seat of Celle, but since the 1660s he had ceded his rights of primogeniture to his younger brother, Ernst August, who resided at Hanover, and who pursued and ultimately realised the dynasty's ambitions for the ninth electorate, in 1692.

3 This important group of silver was described by Lorenz Seelig, ‘Huldigungspräsente der Herzöge von Braunschweig und Lüneburg’, Patrimonia, 350 (Niedersächsische Landesmuseen Braunschweig, 2010), catalogue nos. 5, 9, 15.
