Health and environmental effects of phthalate plasticisers for poly(vinyl chloride) – an update

Pages 476-481 | Published online: 19 Jul 2013

Abstract

The established information is summarised and used together with the latest research findings to present a current understanding of the health and environmental effects of phthalates. It is concluded that the carcinogenic and reproductive effects produced by phthalates in rodents are species specific and of little relevance to humans. The environmental impact of phthalates is considered to be low due to their ready biodegradability and low toxicity.
