Durability of biomaterials and biocorrosion

This special issue of Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology has a focus on the topic of durability of biomaterials and biocorrosion. It is with great pleasure I have served as the Guest Editor for this issue, which presents original articles which have been contributed from research groups around the world.

The corrosion of biomaterials is a timely topic that has seen significant activity recently stimulated by interest in bioresorbale implants. Such implants, typically based on magnesium and its alloys, rely on corrosion to serve their role.

In this vein, the contributions to this special issue not only cover the topic of bioresorbale implant materials, but also the key aspects surrounding the topic. This includes papers on all of: the impact of alloying elements on in-vitro corrosion,Citation1Citation4 the performance of coatings on stifling biocorrosion,Citation5 the influence of the corrosion environmentCitation6,Citation7 and proteins,Citation8 a critical paper on the state of research to date.Citation9 There is also a manuscript covering the topic of biocorrosion of a range of metallic glasses,Citation10 and additionally there is also a contribution on the durability of the more permanent implant material, titanium.Citation11

The original papers herein combine to give several new insights and I hope you enjoy this special issue as much as I enjoyed being part of it.
