Laser processing of diamondlike carbon thin films for medical prostheses

Pages 127-143 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

Diamondlike carbon thin films may provide next generation medical device surfaces with unique hardness, friction, wear, corrosion, and cell interaction properties. In the present paper, laser processing, mechanical properties, and medical applications for diamondlike carbon thin films are reviewed. Diamondlike carbon processing parameters are discussed, with emphasis given to novel techniques for improving diamondlike carbon film adhesion. Potential applications of diamondlike carbon thin films in biosensor, cardiovascular, orthopaedic, and microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices are examined. Finally, future directions in diamondlike carbon thin film research are presented.
