Abstract

Cold spray deposition is an emerging technology that addresses many classic shortcomings of more traditional thermal spray processes. Efforts are under way as of this writing to develop a more comprehensive scientific basis for the cold spray process as well as a wider range of suitable materials and its applications for corrosion protection. This paper presents a tutorial introduction to the cold spray coating process, highlighting the coating formation mechanisms, its characteristics and applications. It includes the comparison of cold spray technique with some popular thermal spray techniques. A thorough survey on the combinations of coatings deposited on diverse substrates with their features has also been detailed with emphasis on its applications for oxidation/corrosion protection.
