Three 19th-century house sites in rural Ireland

Abstract

This report describes archaeological research at three house sites in rural Ireland. The anthropologically-based research began in 1994 with the goal of attempting to understand the material conditions of daily life in the 19th-century Irish countryside. The excavation results presented here were obtained from individual households in counties Roscommon, Sligo and Donegal, at sites dating from the early to mid-19th century. Two of the sites are known to have been abandoned as a result of forced eviction. Particular attention is paid to the ceramics found.

Ce rapport décrit la recherche archéologique de trois sites de logement dans l'Irlande rurale. La recherche a commencé en 1994 avec l'objectif anthropologique de tenter de comprendre les conditions matérielles de la vie quotidienne dans la campagne irlandaise du XIXe siècle. Les résultats des fouilles présentés ici ont été obtenus à partir des maisons individuelles des comtés de Roscommon, Sligo et Donegal, sur des sites datant de la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Deux des sites sont connus pour avoir été abandonnés suite à une expulsion forcée. Une attention particulière est portée à la céramique mise au jour.

Dieser Bericht beschreibt die archäologischen Arbeiten auf drei Bauplätzen im ländlichen Irland. Die Untersuchung begann 1994 mit dem anthropologischen Ziel, die materiellen Bedingungen des täglichen Lebens auf dem Lande im 19. Jahrhundert zu verstehen. Die Ausgrabungsergebnisse, die hier vorgestellt werden, stammen aus individuellen Haushalten in den Landkreisen Roscommon, Sligo und Donegal, und zwar auf Grundsrücken aus dem frühen bis mittleren 19. Jahrhunderts. Wir wissen, daß zwei der Grundstücke auf Grund gerichtlicher Ausweisung geräumt wurden. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt den Keramikfunden.

Questa relazione descrive la ricerca archeologica condotta in tre siti abitativi nell'Irlanda rurale. La ricerca iniziò nel 1994, con l'obiettivo antropologico di tentare di comprendere le condizioni materiali della vita quotidiana nella campagna irlandese del XIX secolo. I risultati di scavo qui presentati derivano dallo studio di singole abitazioni nei distretti di Roscommon, Sligo e Donegal: si tratta di siti databili fra l'inizio e la metà del XIX secolo. È noto che due di questi siti furono abbandonati in seguito a sfratti forzati. È stata dedicata particolare attenzione alle ceramiche recuperate.

Este artículo describe la investigación arqueológica llevada a cabo en tres yacimientos de habitación en la Irlanda rural. La investigación comenzó en 1994 con el fin de intentar comprender las condiciones materiales de la vida cotidiana en el paisaje rural de la Irlanda del siglo XIX. Los resultados de la excavación que aquí se presentan derivan de casas individuales en los condados de Roscommon, Sligo y Donegal, fechadas en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Se sabe que dos de los yacimientos fueron abandonados por desalojo forzado. El artículo se centra especialmente en las cerámicas encontradas.
