Second life for casks

Pages 43-45 | Received 05 Jun 2013, Accepted 15 Aug 2013, Published online: 25 Dec 2013

Abstract

Casks can face decommissioning from their intended use for many reasons: for example, they reach administrative retirement due to regulatory changes, they become too expensive to maintain in intensive use, the characteristics of their payload evolve, the transport of some fuels is discontinued or present day technology results in more economical concepts. Many of these casks are still perfectly and safely usable for other purposes. Reuse of casks has merits from economic and environmental points of view. It alleviates unnecessary disposal of materials, design and production of dedicated casks, premature use of decommissioning funds and use of expensive repository or storage space. Examples are given of successful reuse of casks, and insights are provided into further uses of existing casks, as transport casks into onsite transfer and/or storage, transport and disposal of waste, spent fuel casks into MOX fuel transport, emergency storage of unexpected waste, etc.
