Arthroscopic shoulder surgery has progressed, has the rehabilitation?

Abstract

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery has progressed substantially over the past twenty years. Operations have become less invasive, with less tissue damage. Implants have become stronger, with more secure repairs. This has allowed for earlier mobilisation, less pain and faster recovery. Our understanding of tissue healing and shoulder biomechanics has also improved with advances in rehabilitation methods. However, surgical post-operative programmes have remained similar to the traditional open techniques. In this article I will cover the advances and understanding in surgery, tissue healing and rehabilitation with an attempt to bring them together for enhanced recovery from modern shoulder surgery.
