This issue includes two papers on Iron Bridges; one on the portrayals in art ofthe Iron Bridge at Coalbrookdale and the other a re-publication of a paper on the Iron Bridge at Sunderland by our late member John James. That paper was originally published by the then Newcastle-on-Tyne Polytechnic but has long been out of print, so it seemed appropriate to re-issue a slightly revised and re-illustrated version here for a wider audience. The Archivist at the Sir John Soane’s Museum told me that she was pleased we were republishing the paper since she gets regular enquiries about it – a measure of the continuing reputation of its author over twenty five years after his death.
