Understanding and defining roles in the pharmacist–patient relationship

Abstract

Along with increased consumerism in healthcare, pharmacists (RPhs) are quickly advancing as key medical advisers to patients; however, minimal research focuses on this particular relationship between health professional and patient. A recent study of RPhs and patients explored: (1) current views of RPh–patient communication related to traditional medication therapy, as well as increased use of herbal therapies; (2) the perceptions and expectations inherent in the RPh's role as a healthcare professional. Results identified three significant roles for modern RPhs, key responsibilities associated with each role, and an inherent need for communication skills training for RPhs and patients to maximise this relationship and realise positive health outcomes.
