Diffusion interactions in Fe-Mn-S at 1300°C. Paper II

Abstract

A series of diffusion couple experiments simulating the interactions between Fe, MnS and liquid FeS are reported. These simulations correctly model a number of diffusion interactions which pertain to the solidification formation of sulphide inclusions in commercial steels. The diffusion coefficient for cations in stoichiometric MnS is:

D = 29.4 exp (−63,960/RT) cm2/sec

Diffusion in MnS is not likely to be rate limiting in the interaction where FeS is transformed to MnS in the presence of a γFe(Mn) matrix, although this could be the case for similar reactions involving δ Fe(Mn).

Résumé

Les auteurs font état d'une série d'expériences simulant les interactions entre Fe, MnS et FeS liquide au moyen de couples de diffusion. Ces expériences simulent fidelement les phénomènes de diffusion qui se manifestent pendant la formation des sulfures dans les aciers. Le coefficient de diffusion cationique dans le cas du MnS stoechiométrique est:

D = 29.4 exp (−63,960/RT) cm2/sec

Il est peu probable, en conclusion, que la diffusion dans le MnS joue un rôle dominant au cours de la transformation du FeS en MnS dans une matrice de Fe-γ(Mn). Toutefois, il est possible que la diffusion dans le MnS régisse le taux de la transformation lorsqu’une matrice de Fe-δ(Mn) est en cause.
