Pages 171-192 | Published online: 18 Jul 2013

Abstract

The general purpose and content of this review is to present the nature and magnitude of air-pollution sources in the integrated iron and steel industry and the control technology applied to these problems. Processes included in the discussion are: coke production; sintering; ironmaking; steelmaking by basic oxygen, open-hearth, and electric furnaces; rolling, processing, and finishing operations; and ferrous foundries. For each process, the activities which generate pollutants are described. The quantity of emissions, physical and chemical characteristics of the emissions, primary methods of control, alternative control techniques, basic considerations in selection of control systems, and current technological developments are discussed. The impact of regulatory and legislatiye activity in the field of air-pollution control and the effects on the steel industry are also discussed, along with specific examples of regulatory problem areas of special concern to the industry.
