Antimicrobial Management of Intra-abdominal Infections

Abstract

Antimicrobial therapy of intra-abdominal infection must be based on its etiology, which is generally polymicrobial, and its location, with the aim of selecting the most suitable antimicrobial agents not only according to their spectrum but also their pharmacokinetic profile. Currently, both monotherapy and combination therapy can be used, thanks to the availability of newer drugs characterized by a wide range of antimicrobial activity against both aerobes and anaerobes. Antibiotic choice and duration of therapy also vary according to the severity of the infection.
