Effects of room-temperature prestrain on creep-fracture behaviour of Nimonic 105

Abstract

Under high-temperature creep conditions, Nimonic 105 normally fails by the formation of oxidized surface-nucleated cracks. This type of intergranular fracture mode can be modified by prior deformation at room temperature such that creep failure of the prestrained material occurs by cavitation. The high incidence of grain-boundary voids introduced by the prestrain then results in marked reductions in rupture life and creep ductility.
