Abstract
Family stories have received increased attention in multiple disciplines during the last 2 decades. Using a case study method, this study investigated the differences in family stories among three families of different ethnicities: European American, Mexican American, and African American. The research focused on the functions of family stories. Further, the article analyzes the differences among these families that may affect the functions of their stories.
Several functions of family stories were evident in all families, including entertaining, inspiring, reminiscing, and teaching. Some differences in functions were found among families of different ethnicities. The findings are discussed and examined in terms of ethnicity.
