Abstract
ABSTRACT: Awards such as the Oscars provide a valuable measure of a film's cinematic quality. This article reviews the frequency distribution of Oscar and Golden Globe nominations and wins between 1983 and 2000 to determine whether an underlying relation can be found. This study finds that, as with the distribution of box office revenues, the distribution of awards across films is skewed and can be approximated by the Yule distribution. This would imply that, as far as film awards are concerned, success breeds success. Because this phenomenon appears in 2 separate tournaments with different electorates, it is suggestive of a common opinion-forming process.
