Mathematical Difficulties and ADHD

Pages 53-62 | Published online: 08 Jun 2010

Abstract

Most of the research on academics and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has focused on reading disorders in children with ADHD rather than difficulties in mathematics. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of studies focusing on students with attention deficit disorders with or without hyperactivity and 1 area of academic achievement—mathematics. Specifically, we present research findings about the mathematical outcomes of students with ADHD as they relate to mathematical problem solving and calculation. The ADHD literature has underlined the negative consequences that this disorder often has on academic achievement and progress.
