Abstract
As the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues and medical advances permit persons living with HIV/AIDS to live longer and healthier lives, effective management of HIV/ AIDS in the workplace has become more important. Effective, legal, ethical, and compassionate management of employees with HIV/AIDS requires knowledge of information from several different, yet related, domains. Employers and managers should be informed about organizational HIV/AIDS policy, legal aspects of employment of persons with HIV/AIDS, accommodations for employees with HIV/AIDS-related disabilities, employee benefits packages, and HIV/AIDS education and training in the workplace. Thorough managerial understanding of these areas can facilitate meaningful employment experiences for persons living with HIV/AIDS that can translate into benefits for employers, such as increased productivity among employees and protection from lawsuits. Literature from each of these areas is reviewed and practical applications are discussed.
