Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a training program for participants from a range of disciplines in using oral histories/ reminiscence with elders. The oral histories in this project are “living histories,” combining oral history and the creative arts. A one-group pre-test-posttest design was used to determine if self-rated knowledge about the uses of oral history/reminiscence would increase after participating in an introductory overview workshop and one or more specialized workshops. There was a significant increase in knowledge between pretest and posttest. While number of workshops attended did not influence knowledge, participants with prior experience with oral history showed greater gain. Interdisciplinary training is a promising way to prepare more workers to combine arts and reminiscence in work with elders.
