Abstract
Although many authors have called for researchers and providers to take seriously the issue of spirituality, the vast majority of theoretical and empirical work has emerged from a narrow focus on the spirituality of the Twelve-Step approach. Similarly, many authors have called for greater attention to cultural factors related to alcohol and other drug treatment, but with little clarity about how to create culturally competent programs and staff. This paper integrates the current research on spirituality with a cross-cultural perspective that broadens the concept of spirituality, making it more applicable to the types of clients who enter treatment.
