The Reenactment of Abuse in the Marital Relationship: Theoretical and Clinical Considerations

&
Pages 57-74 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Very often couples who seek treatment are troubled by dynamics that are the sequelae of childhood abuse. Adult survivors of incest, emotional and physical abuse often carry belief systems and defenses that are re-activated in intimate relationships. Therapy should be tailored to provide for the needs of these couples so that their issues can be explored in a safe environment. Because the therapist's reactions to the couple are often intense, countertransference needs to be processed in a way that can inform and enhance clinical work. These dynamics will be presented using an object relations and systemic framework.
