Reducing the Risk for Falls in the Homes of Older Adults

Pages 29-39 | Published online: 05 Oct 2008

Abstract

Approximately half of the falls that older adults suffer occur in their own home. The kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and staircases are common areas within the home where falls occur. Identifying and correcting potential hazards and installing assistive devices are effective fall prevention strategies that can make the home environment safer for older adults. Safety specialists and design engineers can work with healthcare providers, homecare workers, and the elderly to improve the home environment, thus enhancing the long-term safety and wellness of older adults who wish to live independently in their own homes.
