Summary
The nurturing environment of a geriatric center is uniquely suited to the needs of young people and thus lo intergenerational relationships and programming. Because a nursing home has a relatively stable and accessible population of elderly residents, rich relationships between students and residents have time to develop. A geriatric facility also provides an atmosphere for staff that, for the most part, is not crisis-oriented. For these reasons the geriatric center is an ideal place to link the generations.
This paper discusses programs developed at the Isabella Geriatric Center in New York City which link generations, create a sense of family, strengthen the community, and make the skills and experience of different generations available to one another. Selected programs are proposed as ones which could be developed by any geriatric center which has resources similar to those at Isabella.
