Pages 33-50 | Published online: 11 Oct 2008

Abstract

Canadian social work practice is set in the context of a growing older population, valued universal health care undergoing restructuring and cutbacks, comprehensive income security yet pockets of poverty, pressures of globalization. Research has documented social and economic costs of piecemeal, medicalized service. Ageism is a factor even within the profession and the skills required in Gerontological social work are not fully appreciated. Developments are being made in several areas including, models of practice in abuse, in work with families, in understanding resilience and strengths. The challenge lies in putting our knowledge into action.
